  2. and cools to form extrusive igneous rock. A
  3. lava high in silica is viscous and sticky and
  4. does not flow far, wheras low-silica lava can
  5. flow for long distances. Lava differs from
  6. its parent magma in that the fluid
  7. `fractionates' on its way to the surface of
  8. the Earth; that is, certain heavy or
  9. high-temperature minerals settle out and the
  10. constituent gases form bubbles and boil away
  11. into the atmosphere.
