Molten material that erupts from a volcano
and cools to form extrusive igneous rock. A
lava high in silica is viscous and sticky and
does not flow far, wheras low-silica lava can
flow for long distances. Lava differs from
its parent magma in that the fluid
`fractionates' on its way to the surface of
the Earth; that is, certain heavy or
high-temperature minerals settle out and the
constituent gases form bubbles and boil away
into the atmosphere.
